Easy Woodworking and craft tips and Ideas (13-18 )

..

Discover how to master the art of Woodworking and crafts, Diy and Computer Projects. Use Woodworking and craft tools, Power tools and Machine tools Learn how to create Easy Woodworking and craft Diy and Computer Projects.

13) Easy Woodworking and craft tips and Ideas.

How to treat Rulers.

Treat rulers and other measuring and marking tools with respect or they will lose their accuracy. Never cut against a wooden or plastic ruler, rather use a metal ruler.
A steel ruler is primarily a metalworkers tool but you should have at least one for making very precise measurments.
It is also useful as a short straightedge

14) Easy Woodworking and craft tips and Ideas.

How to better use a marking Knife.

Use a pencil for the preliminary marking of joints, and a marking knife to cut the wood fibres to ensure a clean edge when you saw to the line.
Cut on the waste side of the line and the cut will be neat and clean.

15) Easy Woodworking and craft tips and Ideas.

How to check that a square is square.

To check that a square is accurate, first use it to draw a line at right angles to a surface. Turn the square over and align it with the marked line. The edge of the square and the line should match exactly.
A square with a plastic or cast iron stock will remain accurate because the materials are inert.
A wooden stock can react to humidity and the rivits holding the blade can work loose if the tool is dropped.

16) Easy Woodworking and craft tips and Ideas.

How to use a chalk line.

It is sometimes not possible to mark a straight line on a board that is warped or twisted.
You can however use a length of string.
The string in a purpose-made tool is wound into a case containing coloured chalk.
The string is coated each time it is withdrawn.
Stretch the string taught along the intended cut line, then pluck the string like a bow against the wood to deposit a chalked impression on the board’s surface.

17) Easy Woodworking and craft tips and Ideas.

How to look after chisels.

Its not good practise to store chisels loosely in your toolbox.Keep them wrapped in a canvas roll with individual pockets for each chisel or store them in a tool rack behind your bench.

There are magnetic tool racks for sale or with a bit of imagination you can make your own.
Another handy tool rack is one made with two strips of wood or plywood seperated by short spacer blocks.
Skrew the finished chisel rack to the wall and drop the chisels into the slots formed between the two strips of wood.

18) Easy Woodworking and craft tips and Ideas.

How to remove a damaged skrew.

Try tapping the end of the skrewdriver with a mallet.
This sometimes helps to budge a stubborn skrew. Another way is to heat the skrew head with a soldering iron.
Heat expands the metal and when it has cooled down again you may well find that the skrew has loosened. If all else fails use progressively larger drills to bore out the skrew.

A skrewdriver with a worn tip is useless and does more harm than good.
Either sharpen it with a file and oilstone or grind the tip on a bench grinder.

It is virtually impossible to regrind a phillips or cross-headed skrewdriver rather just replace an old one.

Easy Woodworking and craft tips and Ideas (8-12 )

..

8) Easy Woodworking and craft tips and Ideas

Extending the life of your Lathe.

When working on a lathe most wood turners set up their workpiece by either tapping the the piece onto the headstock or they force it in by screwing in the tailstock.

The problem with doing it this way is that it puts pressure on the motor bearings .

This will shorten the life of even the best lathes.

On your next woodworking project try this: Remove the spur from the headstock and tap the spur itself into the end of the workpiece with a wooden mallet. Once your marks are made and the cut is deep enough, put the spur back in the headstock and then tighten up the tailstock. You will find that a lot less pressure is put on the motor.

9) Easy Woodworking and craft tips and Ideas

Sanding drums for a lathe.

Here are two ways to make sanding drums for your lathe.

The first is to turn a drum yourself using a piece of hardwood to the length of your choice.

It can be any length and after experimenting you will find the length to suite yourself.

The diameter of the drum is also optional, but 50mm (2”) is a good size.

Apply a coat of contact adhesive to the drum or dowel you have made.

Then apply contact adhesive to the back of a roll of 25mm (1”) wide sanding strips. The size grit is up to you.

Apply the sanding roll to the dowel at an angle of about 12 to 16 degrees. When complete trim the ends and you now have a handy drum sander.

Another way to make a handy drum sander is to make or buy a dowel and again the length of your choice and divide it into three.

Glue course sanding strip to the left of the dowel.
Glue medium sanding strip in the middle and fine to the right.

This should improve your sanding drum’s versatility and save you time rather than changing the drums.

10) Easy Woodworking and craft tips and Ideas.

A do-it-yourself wooden Mallet.

Here is a wooden mallet that could hit a home run.

Use an old wooden baseball or softball bat that is lying around the garage or you can get one cheaply at a second hand shop or garage sale.

Put your hand as high up on the handle as you can and still feel comfortable holding it.

Cut off the part below your hand and cut off anything above that you wold consider excess for a mallet.
Round off and sand the edges. Drill a hole through the handle and you can hang it on a nail or a pegboard.
You now have an ash or is it a hickory or?? Mallet.

11) Easy Woodworking and craft tips and Ideas.

Using a marking gauge

The marking gauge is a very accurate instrument used to scribe thicknesses and widths for planing cutting or sanding.

However it is often put back in the tool box never to see the light of day again.

The reason for this is because many inexperienced woodworkers don’t use it properly.

Woodworkers who use the marking gauge incorrectly are heavy handed and want to scribe a deep line and therefore put pressure on the scribe pin.The pressure should be on the adjustable head to make sure it stays in contact with the surface of the workpiece.

Rotate the shaft slightly so that the pin just scratches the surface.then do it again to reinforce the line.

12) Easy Woodworking and craft tips and Ideas.

Cutting accurate mitre joints.

When using a mitre box a problem often is that their sides wear out, which effects the accuracy and the tight fit of the mitres.

Don’t throw the the mitre box out just yet.

Make your cuts and then clamp the pieces on top of a builders square so that the pieces are now exactly square.

Carefully saw through the joint and stop just before touching the square.
Remove the square and saw the rest of the joint.
Be sure to mark the pieces as your cut may not have been exactly perpendicular and that joint may not fit in another position.

This may seem like a lot of trouble to go through, but the end result will be a mitre joint to be proud of and is without any gaps between the joints.

Woodworking and Craft Tips and Ideas (1-7)

..

1)Woodworking and craft Tips and Ideas.

Band saw blade settings:

Many woodworkers I know tend to discount the band saw as being a dangerous tool to work with. Do not be too blas’e. The bandsaw can nip off the end of a finger in a flash. These same woodworkers are probably the ones who have problems cutting a straight line without the blade wandering.
Both problems can be solved with this rule of thumb: always place the blade guide no more than 5mm above the workpiece. This will not only increase the accuracy of your cut,but it will also keep your fingers away from the blade.

2) Woodworking and craft Tips and Ideas

Doors, installing:

Installing a striker plate when hanging doors always has been difficult, until now. Next time you are hanging doors,be they cabnet or entry doors, try this:
After the doors are hung, rub a little lipstick on the latch and close the door. The lipstick mark will transfer onto the frame and indicate exactly where to place the striker plate. In the event that you don’t have lipstick, you might trychalk-lind powder or tape a piece of pencil carbon paper to the latch.

3) Woodworking and craft Tips and Ideas.

Drawer handle jigs:

It’s an old story. You are putting handles on that twelve drawer dresser that you built and you realize that measuring, drawing lines, and punching starter holes on each and every drawer is a very tedious job, try this shortcut.
Cut a piece of masonite or plastic sheet, to the exact size of the drawer. Measure and place the marks on the template and then drill required size holes in it. Tape this template to the drawer and drill away.

4) ) Woodworking and craft Tips and Ideas.

Drill bit sharpening:

The tip of a high-speed-steel drill bit is set at a particular angle for the most efficient cutting.Sometimes after sharpening do it yourself or have it done professionally, you may want to verify the angle.

The following shortcut will make it simple.

Go to your parts bin and pick out two hexagonal nuts, place them side by side or clamp them with vicegrips or glue them together.Hold the tip of the bit in the outside angle of the hex nuts.
The tip of the bit should fit in this angle without any air space or gaps.

5) Woodworkingand craft Tips and Ideas.

Tightening Bits in a drill :

After removing a drill bit from your drill you notice some scraping on the bit shank.Take another look at how you installed the bit.
This scraping of the shank is usally caused by a loose chuck:

The bit is losing its grip.

To prevent this make it a habit to always tighten all three holes in the drill chuck.

6) Woodworking and craft Tips and Ideas.

Drilling holes in tight corners:

Trying to get your portable drill into areas that are just too small for a drill to fit into can be a problem.
Here are two solutions to the problem.

The first involves using the adjustable chuck found on electric drills, and fitted on socket wrenches. (use a bolt with threads that match the chuck and tighten two bolts to the other side.Tighten securely. The bolt at the end fits into the socket.)

Fit your drill bit into the chuck and use the wrench to drill the hole.

The second solution also involves a socket wrench.

There are drill bits available that fit into cordless screwdrivers. These drill bits have the standard five-sided shank on them and fit nicely into a ¼” socket.
The socket wrench can now be used as a drill to get into those tight spots.

7) Woodworking and craft Tips and Ideas.

Fixing laminates / Formica to work surfaces:

Plastic laminate such as Arborite or Formica is easy to put on surfaces such as table tops or counter tops, but they can create problems later on that are not immediately apparent when you apply them.
Changes in tempreture and humidity react on both the glue and the laminate, with the result that the laminate causes stress on the substrate (the piece that it is glued to) and causes it to warp, twist, or lose its bond.
The way to prevent this is to purchase a backing sheet when you buy the laminate.
A backing sheet is of the same thickness as the top sheet, but has no pattern.

Its sole purpose is to equalize the pressures created by the glueing of the top sheet and thus gives the countertop a longer life.

Do-it-Yourself Roofing

Hi

Welcome, fellow Woodworking and Craft enthusiasts.

Do-it-Yourself Roofing, Is it Advisable? Some Tips and Guidelines

Many do-it-yourselfers pride themselves in their handiwork, you can just see their garages filled to the brim with tools for those all around jobs.

But ask any of them, installing roofs or repairing them is an unexciting and trying job, but someone has got to do it.

When it comes to home protection against nature’s elements, the roof is one of the most important aspects. A roof with a leak or a hole can cause irreparable and immeasurable damage and harm to your furniture and appliances and don’t forget your carpeting and paint, all of these in just a matter of a short time.

The roof of your house is an essential part of your home; they provide protection from the rain, snow, sleet, hail, and the sun’s light and heat. To fully do this, the roof must be sealed tight against water and such.

Roofs should be tough and durable, yet they must be versatile enough to handle all kinds of weather and any factor brought upon by the location of your home.

It is ideal that the roof be fire resistant. There are many kinds of roof, differentiating in design, materials used and others.

Usually, a roof consists of the roofing material used for the main cover, the frame where the will be attached, and other aspects and components.

Building or repairing a roof can be very simple or very complex task, this will depend on the design and finish of your roof.

Now here comes the question, can you afford to do it on your own?

Yes it’s cheaper when you slash the labor costs but if you don’t have the necessary skills and know how, it might just cost you more in the end.

There are many factors to consider when deciding upon it. Take a deep good look on your skills, tools and the time you can afford, a roof needs to be finished right away, you don’t want your house exposed to extreme weather conditions and to burglars.

Be sensible and reasonable about your skills, it is better to downgrade it than upgrade it then soon regret your decision.

Building or repairing a roof needs special tools, you can buy some but that would be impractical, you may also rent them but if you damage them you’ll still have to pay for them, remember if your not familiar with the tools don’t use them or at least be cautious.

When it comes to building or repairing things, always be careful.

You are using dangerous tools and you may hurt yourself, this is especially considered when doing roofs since your high above the ground. Be patient when building or repairing the roof. If you go too fast you may get confused and end up with more mistakes, which may cost you more.

Be wary of your tools, follow the directions provided and make sure that you unplug them when not in use or when changing blades or drill bits. Wear eyes and ears protection always; wear protective clothing and gears such as heavy soled boots.

Make sure that when you work on the roof, it is water free and not slippery, clean up scraps and dirt so as not to slip on them.

Do not force yourself; in case a material is too heavy or slippery get some assistance.

Remember; plan ahead so you can be ready for anything and everything.

Building something by yourself provides great pride and joy after its completion, but take everything into consideration for your own sake.

When you have done your roof you could stand back and admire it because you have just provided a roof for your family.

Woodworking machinery

Hi

Welcome, fellow Woodworking and Craft enthusiasts.

Woodworking is an activity that requires patience, precision, and attention to detail.

Some of the fine woodworking methods practiced by early craftsmen and carpenters are still used today. Fine woodworking is a long-cherished tradition, enjoyed by young and old.

While the trend in woodworking is toward using machines for as many tasks as possible, fine woodworking craftsmen spend a great deal of time attempting to keep alive some of the more traditional methods of woodworking.

You'll want to invest in some protective binders for fine woodworking, as you'll refer to the information in them over and over.

It used to be that woodworking "secrets" and tricks of the fine woodworking trade were handed down through the generations, from master craftsmen to apprentices.

Serious craftsmen and women are deeply involved with furthering their knowledge about fine woodworking, by studying the methods and techniques of those who came before them.

Woodworking machinery is any machine that is intended to convert wood into objects for human use and where woodworking is going to be a hobby, or a possible career for you, used woodworking machinery is a good place to start.

The world market for woodworking machinery is worth approximately Eur 11 to 12 billion, including used and rebuilt machines.

Woodworking machinery is the essential "engine" of virtually every furniture workshop.

Woodworking machinery is used in the process of woodworking which refers to the art of crafting wood products like furniture, wood statues, cabinets, decorative items etc by the processes of sawing, planing, steam bending, gluing, and finishing.

Aside from the usual home improvements and house repairs, there are other applications where woodworking machinery is used.
As valuable, accurate and time-saving as woodworking machinery is, woodworking with hand tools is still a challenging and enriching experience.

However because of its versatility, when only one piece of large woodworking machinery is owned, it will often be a table saw.

If the use of a guard on woodworking machinery is clearly impracticable for a specific operation, the guard may be removed, but an appropriate push stick, jig, feather board or similar device must be used to prevent the operator encroaching into the cutting area, and upon completion of the operation the guard must be replaced.

Cleaning woodworking machinery is quick and dust-free if you use a vacuum cleaner.

Woodworking tools are used in many different professions and walks of life, from school classrooms to construction sites.
From building a little birdhouse for a school project to fixing things around the house, woodworking tools are needed by everyone of every age.
From wood adhesives to wood drills to wood saws, woodworking tools are numerous and come in every shape and form.

Because many woodworking tools are sharp, and some are motor powered, safety should be a paramount concern.

Some woodworking tools have been around for over centuries and have not changed much and others have been improved widely over the past years.

Woodworking tools are not cheap since they are finely tuned machinery and collectors of antique woodworking tools are growing in numbers as more people discover the fun of searching for these work implements from years past.

And until the next woodworking and craft workshop don’t stop smiling.

DIY Home Improvements

Hi

Welcome to the world of Woodworking and crafts

Arbitron, a major media service, uncovered who's really doing, "Do it yourself, home improvements".

An average of 49 percent of the adult population in 75 cities throughout the country made a home improvement of some kind, in the past 12 months, as reported in a new study by Scarborough Research.

The results show that people who live in smaller areas are more inclined to do their own home improvements in comparison to those who live in larger big-city, areas.

In cities like Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, who came in at number one, Buffalo, New York and Toledo, Ohio, it's reported that over half of their population has begun a home improvement project in the past 12 months.

55 Percent or more of the population in the cities of Atlanta, Rochester, Indianapolis, Detroit and Cincinnati have either started or finished a home improvement project, landing them in the top 10, of all the areas reported.

Ranking lowest, Honolulu, Hawaii was reported to have only 37 percent of it's population doing their own home improvements in the last 12 months, making Honolulu number 75 out of all cities accounted for.

In bigger cities like Fresno, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, San Diego, New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Miami and Washington DC, it was reported their population as doing less than the average number of repairs to their homes with percentages in ranging from 40 to 48.

With all the home improvement happening by do it yourselfers in smaller communities, it would appear that this is the arena in which companies offering materials and services geared toward home improvement, would do the majority of their advertising.

Among the above findings, it was also reported that do it yourselfers were more apt to paint or wallpaper their interiors or try their hand at landscaping, with a telling twenty-five percent of all surveyed.

A small percentage (two) were said to install their own home security systems, while a mere one percent add a pool or spa.

Studies show, since 1999, people have dished out 30 percent more money to improve the overall look of their homes.

The average cost of today’s home improvement is over $3,000! If history repeats itself, that number will likely continue to climb.

A resounding 46 percent of all do it yourselfers were between the ages of 35 and 54, and 63 percent are married with 55 percent having a total household income of over $50,000. But there's more to this story!

The Scarborough Research study also uncovered the following interesting facts.

People who use the internet will likely turn to do it yourself home improvement, as opposed to those who do not.

And note-worthy enough of those internet users, the ones who search out financial services, vehicle information and frequent auction sites are even more apt to do their own home improvement!

Music lovers of classic, country and 70's along with sports radio fans are 14 percent more likely than the average to do home improvements too!

The breakdown for do it yourself home improvements, go like this: Of those fifty three percent who remodeled their own kitchens, just four percent broke down and paid for the work to be done.

Ranking high among what most home improvement do it yourselfers are doing, include painting and wallpapering, remodeling bathrooms and landscaping.

Projects that do it yourselfers would rather pay to have done include the installation of home of home security systems, carpeting or flooring and heating or air conditioning.

Simple Projects

There are many things one has to keep in mind when you start with simple woodworking projects and this article will give you some ideas for how to get started with simple woodworking projects.

Never attempt even simple woodworking projects without being educated in woodworking safety.

Try some simple woodworking projects that require only hand tools. Once you feel comfortable with simple woodworking projects, you can move on to some more advanced jobs.

Some of the most popular and simple woodworking projects happen to be the construction of tables. This will get you on your way to completing some simple woodworking projects.

There are many different simple woodworking projects that are ideal for new crafters. Simple woodworking projects usually require basic tools like a table saw, circular saw, router, drill and sander.

Planning simple woodworking projects also means that you need to find out about wood tools for a specific project to.

By trying a few initial simple woodworking projects you will be able to hone your skills without costing yourself a fortune and simple woodworking projects are a joy to perform and to behold and can give you a great sense of fulfillment.

A Plan B

Hi
Welcome to the world of Woodworking and crafts
Todays topic: - A plan B

By: Kevin Richards

Dear Friend, The Global Economic Crisis is real; daily we are faced with the facts and figures all around us and on the media. Millions of Jobs are lost; Families are losing their homes and companies closing down. This worldwide monster recession has caused worldwide panic and fear; many have to seek alternative ways of earning income to continue providing for their families.

I am sure everyone reading this page knows someone who has lost their job in this harsh economic climate. It could be a spouse, parent, brother, sister, cousin or a friend. This situation poses great challenges for everyone especially those with children to provide for, after losing your job there is no guarantee you will get another job right away.

Businesses have to make tough decisions to lay off some of their best workers with years of dedicated service just to try to keep afloat; some people have placed their life savings in the bank only to discover one day that they have been wiped out totally!!! No one knows exactly when this recession will end.

What next? Is the big question many of us ask?

Well right now is the time for you to use your creativity, harness the power of the Information highway to develop new markets which will generate income.

We all need a plan B…

now is the time for small businesses and Richard will show you opportunities which will help you through these hard times.

Think about it - in this tough economy, doesn't it make sense to be in charge of your own destiny?

I'm betting you know at least one person who's lost their job through this monster recession, maybe you even lost yours? You need to put in place a solid business system so that you'll never have to work for someone else ever again...

The great thing about Social Networks, they are designed with features to allow anyone to make money by integrating into their network and benefiting from their millions of members.

This gives the average Joe the ability to generate a consistent monthly income from the comfort of his home.

There are applications and third party website ideas which you can implement to make a living online. If you were laid off you have the time to focus on it as a full time job and if you are still employed you can do it to earn additional income on the side.

I would encourage everyone to have a financial recession plan B, Take charge of your life and be prepared.

Best wishes

The Radial-arm Saw

Hi
Welcome to the world of Woodworking and crafts.

When assembling a list of necessary shop tools, the radial-arm saw is often overlooked, or at least relegated to a lower spot on the list of priorities. This is likely due to its relative expense when compared to other woodworking and craft tools. However, few woodworking machines are as versatile, especially when one considers the number of operations it can perform.

Once you add one to your arsenal of woodworking and craft tools, you may never want to be without one again.

Unlike most types of woodworking woodworking and craft machinery, the radial arm saw has a clear genesis: it was invented by Ramond De Walt of bridgeton, New Jersey. De Walt applied for patents in 1923, which were issued in 1925.

De Walt and others subsequently patented many variations on the original, but De Walt's original design (sold under the moniker Wonder Worker) remained the most successful: a circular saw blade directly driven by an electric motor held in a yoke sliding along a horizontal arm that is some distance above a horizontal table surface.

Before the advent of the radial arm saw, woodworking and craft tablesaws and hand saws, were most commonly used for crosscutting timber.

Table saws can easily rip stock, but it is awkward to push a long piece of stock widthwise through a table sawblade.

In contrast, when a radial arm saw is used for crosscutting, the stock remains stationary on the saw's table, and the blade is pulled through the stock.

Beginning about the late1970s, the compound mitre saw began to replace the radial arm saw somewhat, but only for crosscuts and miter cuts since it is unable to perform rip cuts.

The radial arm saw can be less safe when used by an inexperienced or untrained operator, but is not dangerous when used properly. In the hands of an experienced operator, the radial arm saw can safely cut compound miters necessary for woodworking and crafts, picture and door frames, rip lumber precisely to width, cut tongues and grooves, and make variable dadoes.

Most cuts are followed with a fit and require more material be removed, sometimes a tiny amount (which is easy to do). Like the compound mitre saw, the radial arm saw can make these cuts with absolute precision, but is capable of making a wider variety of cuts, including more complex ones.

In the home woodworking and craft shop the radial arm saw is an alternative to the table saw.

Both machines can rip, crosscut, do simple and compound miters, dado, mold or shape, make tenons, make open mortises, taper cut, and rabbet.

The radial arm saw requires less clearance or space in the woodworking and craft shop to handle long stock. A radial arm saw only requires clearance on the sides, whereas a table saw needs clearance to the sides, in front, and in back.

The radial arm saw is perfectly efficient backed up against a wall, where as the table saw wants to be placed in the center of the woodworking and craft shop to give all around clearance.

With some accessories the radial arm saw can be used as a shaper, a disk or drum sander, a grinder, a surface planer, or a horizontal boring machine, whereas a table saw's secondary uses are limited to shaper and disk sander. The only short coming of the radial arm saw is that it cannot make finger lap joints which the table saw can.

As with all tools in your woodworking and craft shop, be sure to read and thoroughly understand the instructions that accompany your power tools before you begin to use your radial-arm saw.

Making sure that your saw is set up properly as per the manufacturer's specs will not only teach you the features of the saw, but how to use it safely.

When in your woodworking and craft workshop, and cross-cutting with a radial arm saw, set the blade depth just below the surface of the table.

If you're using your saw for the first time, you'll end up cutting some grooves into the table sacrificial table top, so you'll want to lower the blade to the cutting position after the saw's motor is up to speed.

Also, never free-hand any work on a radial-arm saw. Always hold the stock securely against the fence.

Keep in mind that as you pull the saw toward you, through the stock, that the blade's rotation is cutting away from the body. This will push sawdust away from the user, but also can cause the saw to lurch forward as it cuts through the stock.

With this in mind, keep a firm grip on the handle and don't let the saw determine the speed of the cut. The motion of pulling the saw toward your body and then holding it back while the blade is cutting can take some practice, but you'll get the hang of it in time.

That’s all for now and until the next woodworking workshop,
Be happy
