Warped wood solution

=
I recently offered to fix up a garden bench that lived outdoors and had taken a beating from the weather. It has cast iron sides to give it the classic bench type style and the slats between the ends were made up of +-15 strips of wood 70mm x 20mm x 1.500mm long.
The original varnish had long since deterioted and the once smart garden bench needed serious attention.
Fortunatly I read Tims blog before starting
This is what Tim does to straighten out warped wood.
“I have one big problem I run into from time to time. Warped wood… Primarily with the ¼ poplar boards I get.
Well I have found a solution that has worked well for me and thought I would share.
The first things you need:
Bath Towel
Iron (I have to sneak it past my wife)
2 pieces of flat (non-warped) wood (these should be a bit bigger than the warped piece)
Clamps
Now I soak the towel in water.
I will also dip the wood in water.
Wrap the wood in the wet bath towel
Iron the towel/wood (here I use the steam option)Flip the wood and do the same
Put the freshly ironed (no starch) wood between the flat pieces and clamp
Once clamped I will let the wood dry for a few days (depending on weather)
After drying the piece should be good to use or finished.”

Thanks Tim I am sure others will be to use your methods on their projects when required.

Getting it right

;
One of the most popular power drills is the variable speed /reversing hammer drill as this gives the Diy handyman the opportunity to use the drill as a skrewdriver as well, making light work of a variety of jobs.
A useful tip when you have broken a drill bit and the working end is still long enough to fit into the chuck of your drill is to wrap the end (about 10-15 Turns) withsoft steel wire. This should fill the grooves and you can continue until you have the opportinitl\y to buy a new one.

Power tools vary from light, low powered to powerful machines with cordless tools displaying amazing torque for battery power. The light machine should not be dismissed in favour of a heavier more powerful one as very often they do a better job than their bigger brothers.

When drilling metal or even softer materials use a centre punch to make a depression to guide the tip of the drill.I have found that when drilling into wall tiles in the kitchen or bathroom use a center punch or nail and tap gently with a hammer until you have just broken through the surface of the tile as this will stop the drill bit from wandering and you will get the hole drilled accurately each time.

Make sure that the drill keeps cutting by using sufficient pressure, especially at high speed as you don’t want to overheat and ruin the bit

The electrical cord of a powertool often gets treated badly and gets tangled and one way to store it is to wrap it loosley in a figure eight pattern from handle to chuck. This way it will stay untangled.
Elactrical chords that have become tangled or kinked can be restored by laying it out to soften in the sun and then cooled in a straight positoin

Do –it –yourself (Diy) overview

.,

Many diy projects are simple and cheap whether you're fixing up an old house or turning an old t-shirt into an easy to make laptop protector, diy projects are a great way to showcase your creativity and often, however, diy projects are about making something useless into something useful.
Whether you want to save money or just repair a broken treasure, diy projects are the perfect solution. Eco-friendly diy projects are satisfying, challenging and almost always money-saving, and frankly we can't get enough of them.
Many diy projects are low-cost, take a short time to produce and can even be completed over a weekend. Diy projects are simple, fun and easy to do.
Diy projects are all the rage nowadays and they actually can save you money in the long run.
Diy projects are set to see a growth as a result of the recession as more people look to save money by doing small home repairs.
From silicon valley to rural towns across the US to every country of the world, diy projects are the engines of innovation that will possably ensuring our energy future?
Diy projects are projects that are done by the home owner without the assistance of a professional but maybe with the use of proffession tools like a sliding table saw, an electric planer and drill and a few other tools.
Diy projects are green and they can be quite satisfying when complete, due to the feelings of pride and accomplishment they inspire. Sure, diy projects are time-consuming - but that's also part of the appeal.
Diy projects are a great way to get your creative juices flowing. You can create as many projects as you like (remodel kitchen, build a shower room etc), set tasks, work out costs, source advice and generally make sure your diy projects are successful!
Time is as valueable an asset as any other, diy projects can be labor intensive. Many are finding that diy projects are easier to undertake with the help of instructional websites which provide step by step instructions and real advice from people who have actually accomplished the diy process.
Instructions for various diy projects are scattered throughout this site.
These diy projects are great! And Diy projects are set to see a growth as a result of the recession as more people look to save.
One at least hopes that those who demonstrate serious potential in these diy projects are headhunted into rewarding jobs.
Many undertake DIY projects with the help of instructional websites which provide step by step instructions and real advice from people who have actually accomplished the diy process. In this age of micro-specialization, its easy to think that masonry and other diy projects are beyond our competencies and yes, some diy projects are more complicated than others.I do find however that one does not always need to be apprensive about any project if one takes the time to do a little planning beforehand and just completes one step at a time.
Sometimes diy projects are not the prettiest models in the parade, but they get the job done and don't cost a whole lotta' cash at the same time. Today do it yourself or diy projects are all the rage.
The impression seems to be that all of these low-cost diy projects are not particularly important. The best diy projects are those done by people who enjoy working with their hands, are well organized and have some construction skills and are willing to learn from others.
Diy projects are always a great way to save money and really let you be creative at the same time many are at least worth a try and diy projects are so much fun! Diy projects are always rewarding and can cut cost dramatically.
Diy projects however are not for everyone. Diy projects are a cost efficient way to achieve this goal. Have you checked out the diy projects on this this site:
http://www.kiwiurl.com/49a
Diy projects are easier than you think and are very popular nowdays.
Diy projects are a great way to save money and improve the home but, according to research, few parents are passing on their handiwork talents to their kids.
Not all diy projects are technical and time-consuming, and there are plenty of projects out there that you can do yourself for less, providing you have a few basic tools and creativity!
Diy projects are definitely in vogue right now.
Diy projects are great, but it is important to understand what the job will entail before you begin.Diy projects are also great stress relievers because your mind is focused on the finished project, temporarily forgetting your daily problems and Diy projects are not necessarily hard to do.
Diy projects are my all-time favourite finds in the blogging world!
Hope your diy projects are fun and successful!

DIY Hot Water (3)

..
At least half of the renewable energy is generated from the sun.
We can tap this energy and use it for heating the water at our home. This not only saves energy or power bills but also controls global warming.
Homeowners may install solar heaters at their home.
It has become a tough time for all these house owners who have been worried on the alarming rise of energy rates and the enormous demand for energy which the power companies are facing difficulty in meeting the expectations.
Let us look into solutions that will save the planet, save our money and save our energy.

A different approach needs to be adapted for solving this problem.
Looking at such situation lot of energy saving guides flooded the market with numerous ideas on how to save energy or build an energy generator at home. One such guide that has become a hit and been followed by thousands of people is he DIY Solar heater guide.
Yes this may be the one that we all are looking for. It mentions the way to heat the water without the need of electricity.
The solar water heaters simply absorb the energy from the sunlight that is free to use. This energy is converted to electrical energy that is used for the heating purposes. In earlier days the same concept of heating water was used but with a different approach. The water was getting the heat from the warmth of the sun.

Today with latest technologies and advanced inventions, DIY Guide suggests the economical way to generate the power to heat the solar heaters installed at your home. The parts for the making of the heater is easily available and all the materials cost less that 100$.
So you are ready to get the hot water with a one time investment that will give life time savings.
The energy from the solar heater system is non pollutant as no gases are evolved. This makes it a system that goes green and controls the global warming.
Here are all the important instructions needed to build the solar water heater at home. It is very easy to understand the step by step instructions given in the guide.
So are you interested to save money by generating energy at home then go for a guide. Read carefully the instructions and start building a DIYsolar water heater for the home to have a cash free bath.

A DIY enthuiasts projects

It’s been a while since I last updated my blog.
I got a job you see, as a Manager/Maintenance/Supervisor for a block of flats overlooking the Durban Harbour.Sounded great and there was a one bedroom flat to go with the job. It was on the tenth floor too. Great I thought. The salary wasn't great but at least I had a job and I could ride my bike down to the beachfront after work.
I couldn't move into the flat right away as there were renovations to be done and it would give me a chance to see what the job was all about.
The 21 story building had been neglected for some time and I could see there were certain projects that needed immediate attention.

1) The water pressure from the local municipality wasn't filling the initial tank fast enough to allow even one pump to supply the demand of water for the 121 apartments
2) One of the two pumps pumping water to the 8 holding tanks on the roof wasn't working properly, one pump could do the job I thought.
3) The two entrance security doors were not closing correctly and people could walk though past the poor agitated security guard without the correct credentials.
4) The window putty holding the glass in the window frames had become loose in about 250 windows and there was a real possibility that many would fall out to the busy streets below.
5)There are two on site parking areas both with the roll up type of doors. The one was jamming in the open position and the other couldn't be opened manually if there happened to be an emergency.
6) There are 22 rubbish bins/containers where residents refuse is collected dialy and three times a week removed by the municipality. This area couldn't be washed down by the cleaning staff as the top of the tap was missing and it had been forced closed .
7) Of the six translucent panels covering the florescent lights in two of the lifts four were broken.
8) The third lift, a service lift had a mind of its own and would jam incessantly. It didnt seem to bother that there were people in transit or not.
9) The doors of the other lifts are infested with borer and never close on many floors thereby stopping on a floor until someone happened to slam the door shut, which wasn't often .The security Guard had to summon one of the cleaning staff to use the stairs on the fire escape to find the errant door and close it.
10) One of the brackets on an external rainwater down pipe on the eight floor had broken and the wind caused this pipe to sway ominously again presenting imminent danger to those below.
And this was just the beginning of a long list of things to do.

Fortunately I had access to a DIY manual as you do to right on this site and I referred to it right away!!
If you would like me to continue please post a comment. or e- mail me
Thanks
